Priorat Wine Tours-Discover, Compare, and Book the Best Option

priorat hills spain

Priorat wine tours offer visitors the opportunity to taste amazing wines while also learning about the unique history of this important Spanish wine region.

The Priorat region’s viticultural and winemaking history dates back to the 12th century when Carthusian monks, who had traveled to Spain from the Provence region of France (already well acquainted with viticulture and winemaking practices) introduced viticulture to the area.

Priorat is best known for its old, low-yielding vines, and difficult poor quality soils which, while bad for crops– facilitate the growth of strong vines that yield intense, compelling, fine wines. The most prevalent wines in Priorat are red (close to 90% of wines produced here are red) and the most prevalently grown grapes are Carinyena (Carignan) and Garnacha/Grenache (Garnatxa in Catalan). However, the region also produces unique white wines.

The most common white grapes are Garnacha Blanca, Macabeo, and Pedro Ximénez. While whites have historically not been a huge focus in the region, the number of wineries making white wines has rapidly increased over the past 5-7 years. Almost all of the wineries we visited in the region offered at least one white wine during our trip in Spring of 2023.
