Looking for locally roasted coffee and locally owned coffee spots that roast their own beans? Here’s a list of local Sonoma County coffee companies that roast their own (fair trade and ethically sourced) coffee beans.

Drink the best-drink locally!

Acre Coffee

Acre Coffee works exclusively with coffee growers who support sustainable farming and business practices, and their expertly roasted coffee has been awarded ‘Best In Sonoma County’. They are one of the most popular local coffee roasters in Sonoma County.

It took me a while to warm up to Acre Coffee, as they came along quite a few years after local and long standing favorites like Flying Goat and Tailor Maid (now Tailor Lane) but once I tried their macchiatos and cappuccinos I couldn’t deny how excellent their coffee is. And their local diehard customers and fans would agree.

Acre has multiple retail/cafe locations throughout Sonoma County in Petaluma, Santa Rosa, and Sebastopol where you can purchase beans from them directly or sit down and enjoy a steamy coffee or espresso beverage. You can also Shop Acre Coffees online and place orders for local pickup or to ship nationwide.

Bella Rosa Coffee Company

Bella Rosa is a locally owned coffee company that roasts 100% organic, fair trade beans for their different coffee and espresso.

Shop for their coffees on their website, catch up with them at local Farmers’ Markets (they regularly attend the Wednesday and Saturday Santa Rosa Farmers Lane markets), or pick up a bag of Bella Rosa’s beans at any local Oliver’s Market.

Black Oak Coffee Company

O.k. so Black Oak isn’t based in Sonoma County (they’re in Ukiah) but I LOVE these guy’s Duomo espresso (it tastes very similar to my favorite Italian espressos) so I wanted to include them here. They are newer to the scene than most of the other businesses on this list but they already taking Northern California and the country by storm and recently opened up a brand new cafe space in downtown Healdsburg!

Since launching, Black Oak Coffee Company have been named the two times running winner of North America’s largest coffee roasting competition, won America’s Best Espresso, and placed in the top five of America’s best roasters.

I came across Black Oak’s espresso one day by chance when I ordered a cappucino at a local cafe and was floored by how incredible the espresso was. I asked them what espresso they used, and they turned me onto Black Oak! I headed up to the Black Oak roastery the next week and met with their roaster/watched them roast their beans. I am super excited for these guys’ new cafe in Healdsburg!

Flying Goat Coffee

I may be biased because I’ve been a Flying Goat customer for fifteen years but I love Flying Goat’s espresso, macchiatos, and cappuccinos and these guys have remained as popular as they are for so long for a reason.

Sadly, the best (and largest) Flying Goat Coffee space in Healdsburg recently closed due to Covid. This was the best cafe to sit in on your laptop while sipping on a Flying Goat coffee or tea beverage (their housemade Chai is also amazing!). BUT, you can still pick up coffee to go at their second Healdsburg location (next to the Raven Theater) and you can also visit their Santa Rosa cafe in Railroad Square.

Not time to sit and sip? You can purchase Flying Goat coffee beans and espresso from either of their local stores (Healdsburg and Santa Rosa) or from their online shop. They even offer ‘coffee subscriptions’ which I think would make a great gift for any coffee lover.

Retrograde Roasters (Santa Rosa)

Retrograde is a certified Green Coffee Roaster. They are rigorously committed to operating their business with as little waste as possible, using environmentally preferred products/materials, and conserving water and energy. Read about their environmentally conscious policies and practices here.

Oh yeah, their coffee is pretty delicious too. Visit Retrograde at their downtown Sebastopol shop or order their coffees online.

locally roasted coffee in cans from Taylor Lane

Taylor Lane Organic Coffee (formerly Taylor Maid)

Taylor Maid Coffee, now located in The Barlow just next to downtown Sebastopol, was rebranded as Taylor Lane Coffee in 2016 when it was sold (to a local investment company) by the original founders (after 25 years) Chris and Terry Martin.

I will always think of Taylor Lane as Taylor Maid, as I started drinking their delicious espresso way back in 2001 when I first moved to wine country. At that time in Sonoma County, Taylor Maid was THE gourmet local coffee served at most of the best restaurants and cafes and used by the best caterers. I remember working a fancy wedding for a local high-end caterer and getting my first taste of Taylor Maid after the guests had gone home and the event staff were trying to wake ourselves up before we drove home. I loved it so much I took an empty package with the label so I could seek it out and buy some to use at home.

Over the years a lot of other local coffee roasters have opened up businesses in Sonoma County, but I’ll always have a soft spot for Taylor Maid/Taylor Lane, the first best locally roasted Sonoma County coffee I have ever drank. I still grab a can of their Goat Rock roast (the best!) any time I pass through Sebastopol.
